Uryuu was born and raised in Colvus, though he claims no real attachment to it. He had no memory of his mother, as she died not long after he was born. He had only his father and grandfather growing up, and it was never a secret that he felt far more attached to his grandfather, Souken, than he did to his father. His father always seemed to be too busy to spend any time with him, so Uryuu turned away and spent all his time with Souken. It was Souken who trained the boy in the Quincy arts. Souken was later killed by monsters, and Uryuu stood by, powerless to stop it from happening. He later accused his father, Ryuuken, of doing nothing to stop it. He was told that Quincy arts were a waste of time, and would not pay for anything. It was made clear that if he followed the path of Souken and became a Quincy, that it would not be met with approval by his father. After that, Uryuu refused to address his father as "father," and began calling him by his first name to show his absolute lack of respect for the man.

Uryuu moved out of his father's house at the age of fourteen, saying he could raise himself, and threw himself into both the study of Quincy arts and the study of intellectual things. He was always top of his class, and to those who knew of his Quincy abilities, he was considered a genius. (It was not known to Uryuu until much later that his father even retained any abilities as a Quincy at all.) Uryuu learned skill with difference engines, and eventually found hidden information on Souken's death. It seemed that the military had known there was a threat to the man's life, and had either ignored it or not arrived in time to save him. Due to that bit of information, Uryuu grew to hate all military factions, and cannot trust anyone who is deeply military.

Uryuu was eventually curious about air travel, and enlisted on a ship without too much hassle. He had no love for the military, of course, and chose to be on a ship that had no attachment to any faction. He took to the life quite well, and his intelligence and memory has allowed him to gain a position on the ship permanently.

(It is also known that Uryuu does mercenary work on the side, though he has a high price and does not like to actually kill people. Because of that, he does not do mercenary work very often at all.)
